I only learned that I had ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) when I was in 6th grade. Yet I only started taking medication when I was in 8th grade. If I had known that I had ADHD younger who would have known what would have happened?
Second grade was the first time that I showed symptoms that lined up with when I started going to public school. I remember going into this back room and having to read off words from a sheet of paper. Remembering getting distracted and looking away a few times this hurting how many words I read putting me in the lowest reading level class. Another example of this was in 4th grade when I had trouble reading so my mom took me to the eye doctor not finding anything. They just gave me some reading glasses and who would have guessed nothing changed.
In the Child Mind Institute “What’s ADHD (and What’s Not) in the Classroom.”, Child Mind Institute explores how kids with ADHD affect the classroom and how the classroom affects kids with ADHD. Specifically, kids begin to be diagnosed when they do badly in school like interrupting, fidgeting, and losing homework. Although this directly correlates with systems of ADHD we need to rule out other possibilities of what is causing this behavior. If we don’t do this it can cause kids to be misdiagnosed leading to more problems.
ADHD started to affect my grades, especially in English class. Reading and writing kept feeling like something was dragging me away from learning. Reading the article above made me realize that I had ADHD and I was fidgeting and interrupting not the class but myself and my mind. Going into 6th grade I knew that I would have to focus on ELA and my other subjects because it would start to be more serious. Still having trouble Reading and writing, my mom and I went to the doctor and later found out I had ADHD. After this, the doctor prescribed me a medicine called Vyvanse. This medicine has the unfortunate downside of making it harder to eat. It makes you feel less hungry.
This medicine made school and life easier, helped me focus, and my constant fidgeting and mind interruptions. Having been diagnosed with Adhd soon I think it would have changed my outlook and the way I lived my life I could have gone to a higher grade and enjoyed school more. What I am saying is that having ADHD is not a bad thing, just that if you feel like your kid or yourself has the symptoms it can positively affect your life if they get diagnosed and start taking medication.
