The standardized grading system is something that our schools have been using for a while now to keep students in line. The schools use the grading system as a reward factor for effort, time, and efficiency. The grading system isn’t as great as schools play it out to be. There are several problems as to why the grading system is bad for its students.
Firstly, the grading system undermines the use of others and companions in times of need. Students are taught their entire childhood not to look at anyone elses paper, or to “not cheat” so that the teachers can get an accurate display of that students particular abilities. While this is an approach to see how much information someone can relay on a paper, it isn’t a good gauge for ones understanding or abilities. Once students take their final steps of education and into the real world they will realize that you must rely on you colleagues for much of your work. Teamwork is something that schools must emphasize to their students which grading simply isn’t allowing them to do.
Students often get too familiar with their work. Whenever students are given free reign on their topics for assignments they tend to choose things they are familiar with. Students need to have their education as their priority, not their grades. Whenever a student is more worried about their grade looking sufficient rather than learning new things they will start to choose to do easier assignments and simply miss the education they are supposed to be getting. This is a major way that students can miss out on opportunity.
This brings up the conversation for mental health. Grades cause many students’ mental health to plumish. Grades can cause students to feel pressured or like they have a certain goal that they must fulfil at all costs. Over time this can build up in a child and make them go overboard.
The overall problem with grades is that they have become the center focus at our schools. Whenever you hear a student talking about a class you will always hear them say, “That’s an easy A” or “That class will ruin your GPA.” Grades have become the pinacle of value in schools today which must stop.
All in all, the grading system has several flaws that must be seen and pointed out if it is going to be stopped. The Grading system doesn’t teach students the power of teamwork, students laze into easier work which shortens their horizons, deminish students mental health, and has become the overall focus of students today. While we have gotten thus far with the grading system in tact it is time for things to change so that we can progress even further.
