(For this reading, a cult will be referred to as a group of people that participate in taboo practices and are isolated from society.)
What is Relgion?
Religion is the worship of somebody or something that posseses superhuman powers or power. Religions often have guidelines that it’s members are supposed to follow and usually have a leader to teach the rest of the congregation about their rules. Religion has always been a socially acceptable thing to practice is most cultures and countries, but most religions worship people or things that are “beyond” physical bodies.
So Whats The Difference?
If you read my last blog, we went in depth about what a cult is and some of the practices they do. But as a quick refresher, Cults often worship an actual living person and are often manipulated by them. Therefore, one of the key differences between cults and religions is that religions worship a diety beyond a human body, and cults worship a person that still lives. Religions is also often ropes people in with the promise of heaven, love, and acceptance, while Cults usually rope people in by manipulation tactics.
The setting in which these 2 institutions take place is also vastly different. For example, Cults are usually secluded from the rest of society in an isolated region. Religions on the other hand don’t exist in a single location or setting. Religions exsist for people going through their day to day lives, away from the places where they worship. On the other hand, Cults often consume your entire being and you have to dedicate your life to your institution.
The people also make a huge difference between the 2. Cult’s often have far less people than religions. This is because Cults value control and the more people, the harder it is to control. Religions often times become world wide and get devout followers from all over the globe.
