My whole life I’ve wanted to pick out my own outfits, or play dress up with my friends or family, or even pick out my mom’s outfits. As I got older, and was allowed more and more freedom to dress myself, I put on some questionable outfits. But really I was only just exploring my style and keeping up with the latest trends in fashion.

Every season new trends and ​​color schemes come about for people to follow and go along with. But why is this? Why is it that certain colors or styles are only popular for a certain amount of time?

What I’ve found is that there are five main reasons for rapid changes in trends in fashion. Cultural shifts, seasonality, innovation and creativity, marketing and consumerism, and historical cycles.

As time progresses, fashion reflects society’s changing values, attitudes, and moods. As the world around us changes, and culture shifts, people express themselves in response to these shifts this is the cause of rapid changes in fashion due to people coping and creativity to express their emotions into something they can say by wearing it instead of saying it.

The fashion industry is built around seasons- spring/summer and fall/winter. The color pallets, textures, and silhouettes tend to shift with the seasons showing a very rapid change in colors, textures, and silhouettes throughout the years.

Fashion thrives on innovation. So sometimes in fashion instead of creating a new fashion trend, designers and influencers will take an existing trend and put their own spin on it creating more influence for the variety and reminding people to be creative when trying new trends.

Brands and retailers rely on regular updates in fashion to draw in consumers to buy more frequently. If we aren’t seeing frequent changes in clothing stores and websites people begin to lose interest and look elsewhere for their fashion. Fast evolution is essential for peoples attention spans with the latest trends.

As seen in previous years fashion tends to recycle itself, with trends from previous decades constantly coming back and even influencing new trends to later be recycled in the future. Fashion is a continuous loop of inventions and innovations within fashion to always keep something new and fresh within grasp of fashion enthusiasts.
