Photography. What exactly is its purpose? How has it changed over time? How does it compare to earlier ways to take pictures like film? As I study deeper into this topic, its important to understand this to learn more about our society that is so heavily influenced around media.

There have been many innovations of the camera over time. Most people prefer the newest way to take pictures or capture moments. But I believe it is important to look at how our society today often misses out on the warmth and the moment of what a picture is meant for. It is not meant to be perfect, its meant to capture the moment.

Quality

There is a clear difference when referring to the quality of both film cameras and digital cameras. It all depends on the type of aesthetic you are going for. If you want a more realistic and true to color picture, then digital is the way to go. Meanwhile for film, it captures the warmth of the moment, and gives the photo a little more grain. It can add to the more ‘vintage’ look of film and specific aesthetic,

Convenience

Most people would lean towards the more digital side when thinking about convince. This being because on a digital camera like a phone or camera, its right at your fingertips. THere is so much work that goes into film camera and film photos. Most of the times its hard to find film to buy. You also have to learn how to load a camera, what type of film to get, and also make sure it doesn’t get jammed. Whereas digital, its just a press of a button, and then you can upload it to your device. It usually takes film a couple of weeks to develop before you can even see the photo.

“Authenticity”

Film takes a long time to develop. This really captures the special-ness of the moment. Without worrying about what you look like in the photo, or if its just right or whatever else it might be. Digital camera users may have a problem with this because in today world we are so consumed with the perfect photo and it often takes away from the moment.

Culture

The culture of cameras and photography has evolved over time. I think that people have lost the true purpose of photography. We today are so consumed with taking a million photos and getting it ‘just right’ that we lose the meaning of the moment. Cameras are meant to capture the memories, no matter if they’re perfect.
