There are a variety of possibilities that may cause mental health issues. It varies greatly with everyone. Rather than just learning how to live with these issues, we should try to learn how to navigate through these issues. Whilst also trying to prevent it to ensure a better way of thinking for the new generations. According to Mind some of the biggest causes are childhood abuse, trauma, and discrimination.
Childhood Abuse
Childhood abuse can play a significant role in a persons mental health as that is when a child’s brain starts to develop. This can lead kids to have a higher possibly of having depression, anxiety, and memory issues.
- Depression: With children dealing with self-blame, guilt, and worthiness. It could possibly lead to children having issues managing platonic and romantic relationships.
- Anxiety: This can be a response to the big impact of stress that these kids had to face. This can later lead to them having panic attacks whenever they’re in loud spaces.
- Memory Issues: With the children feeling unsafe in their household they tend to block out all the awful memories that they have. This can later lead to them blocking out all memories as they grow older. An example would be having trouble remembering every day things.
Trauma
Trauma is a big factor that can play into a persons mental health. This can happen at anytime in your lifetime and can take a toll on anyone regardless of age. This can increase the chances of having PTSD, anxiety, depression, and abuse of substances.
- PTSD: The moment of trauma can be prolonged for a long period of time making people uncomfortable with something that they should easily be comfortable with.
- Anxiety: Its a response to stress and heightened sensitivity to their trauma.
- Depression: Its seen as a stress response to whatever one went through.
- Abuse of Substance: People who struggle with their trauma they might feel for help and decide to self medicate. This can later develop into something worse that will be harder to revert the damage that they made.
Discrimination
Although many people see this as something that won’t hurt anyone and just a simple joke. This can have a great impact in those who have to hear those words. This can later affect people with anxiety, depression, and suicide.
- Anxiety: It can make people hyper fixate on the things that they are saying in fear that someone may make a rude comment towards them. This can lead to having symptoms such as heightened vigilance and chronic stress. It can also make people feel uncomfortable with the thought of going up to an adult and asking for help.
- Depression: Symptoms that can grow from this is trauma and triggering stress. Living without knowing what could potentially be said to them at any time.
- Suicide: Some people can get so affected by the words that someone is saying that they think the only way out of this situation is suicide.
There are always going to be people who will get a high out of hurting other people. Trying our best to not give those people an “upper hand” on our emotions can help us mentally. Understandably, it’s hard to want to go up to an adult and ask for help because sometimes things may not change.
