Wrestling is a sport that changes the way you view life. It changes the way you view everyday situations. It changes how you respond.
But how?
How can a sport rewire the way you think?
Beyond it’s effects physically, wrestling also has effects mentally. Wrestling has been shown to reduce stress and aggressive behavior in adolescents. A pilot program in a Chinese high school, wrestling helped decreases stress with cortisol levels falling 19% and simulated conflict scenarios showed a decrease in anxiety by 1.2 standard deviations.
Furthermore, wrestling also decreases the risks of victimization by promoting self-protection behaviors, in addition to boosting confidence.
This is especially important in the generation with the worst mental health.
Over the past decade, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thought rates have gone up amongst college aged students. In fact, today one-third of college students report having symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Intense wrestling training helps release stress and improve focus and resilience. In today’s time, when the youth are most stressed and depressed, wrestling offers a structured way of pushing back.
