Jewelry is something that almost everyone in the world has worn in some way, shape, or form. Jewelry is a very prominent thing in many cultures throughout history and to this day. Jewelry is worn in different forms starting from infancy and even in death! Jewelry can symbolize connections among people and spirituality.
There are many different kinds of jewelry and it’s really just an “ornament” (something used for beauty) that you wear on yourself. American jewelry typically consists of earrings, necklaces, anklets, rings, and more. In other countries such as Africa, they have more exotic things that stray away from the typical metal and gem. They tend to incorporate parts of the animal such as leather and feathers. In Asia, they tended to wear bigger pieces that were heavily decorated.
Jewelry can be used as a sign of spirituality. For example, the cross, which is mostly used in Christianity is worn to make wearers believe that God is with them and they have spiritual “protection”. In other religions, such as Judaism the Star of David is worn to represent their faith and their deep connection and history. Jewelry is also often worn by witches to get rid of negativity.
Jewelry is often gifted to young children to be worn for various reasons. Throughout their life they may keep this jewelry with them and might even pass it down to their children. Often times, Jewelry can be passes down for many many generations and when made out of the right materials it will stay in good condition.
The most well know reason for gifting jewelry in the United States, is wedding rings and engagement rings. These rings, bought by both partners, are given at the wedding and show a lifelong commitment to each other. Some couples take these extremely seriously and never take them off. Even though it’s just a glorified rock in a circle of metal, these things mean quite a lot to them. When people get divorced the rings are usually taken off and sometimes even given back to show they are no longer bound together by marriage.
Another very popular reason that people wear personal ornaments is to represent something they love. Most notably, people who are very passionate about some hobby might have a necklace or ring signifying it. People who thoroughly enjoy reading might have a book necklace. In addition people who have a favorite quote or religious saying might include that on a bracelet.
In the 2010’s lockets were very popular. When done correctly, these necklaces would be metal and open up. In the inside they would have a picture of something that you cherish. This could be something dead or just something that you love a whole lot. These were typically in a heart shape but could be different.
Very popular among young girls are crowns and tiaras. While they tend to buy tacky cheap ones inspired by movie princesses, these are a very real and very expansive item in many parts of the world. Most commonly thought of is the Royal Families in Europe and crowns. Many important women and men have worn these pieces of Jewelry, especially Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana.
Jewelry has been important for a very long time and still will be even as the styles change. Through its symbolic meanings and statements it will continue to be a staple in all cultures. Jewelry is worn in all stages of life and even after death. Its reign is endless.
