The hit released in 2016, known for it’s catchy and calm songs, further broken down and picked apart to search for it’s deeper feeling and meaning.
If this album was to have one word to describe it, I would give it the word CONTRAST. This contrast starts and lies in even the album cover. The name as written is spelled as “Blonde” (feminine, English )meaning softness, emotion, intuition, and inward reflection while in the cover of the album it’s spelled “Blond” (masculine, French) meaning hardness, distance, and outward presentation. In the musical presentation of the album Frank moves between these two almost opposite emotions constantly.
Beggining
The beggining of blonde is supposed to give you a feeling of love and happiness. The songs tap into the sometimes imperfect, but exciting moments of love and what it means to be loved. Songs like “IVY” tap into Frank’s first true love and it’s ups and downs. Soothing songs to the ear like “SKYLINE TO” contain smooth guitar riffs, and melodic tracks with calm lyrics. This bright connotation you get from this section of music slowly shifts into the song “SELF CONTROL”, where as the name states self control in loves being battled.
Hinge
The complete turn in the album lies in the song “NIGHTS”. This song as the title has it, is the feeling of night in the album compared to the begginging being happy and daytime. The most interesting part of this album to me is that in the middle of nights, the beat switches. The fascinating part of this is that out of the 60 minute album this change is directly at the 30 minute mark, the halfway point. This switch of beats symbolizes more, a turn around of moods.
End
The last quarter of this album is more grief and rememberance then the love before. Songs like “WHITE FERRARI” display a extreme contrast with the heart breaking slow beat followed with mellow lyrics:”I’m sure we’re taller on another dimension”,”I care for you still and I will forever”. The final song displayed to the audience is “FUTURA FREE”. This song zooms out from the rest of the other songs and tells a story of past experiences in a sense of confidence, but also with a slight anxiousness conveyed.
