Sesame Street (Series) - TV Tropes

The way that people view the world around them is taught. This may seem obvious because everything that children learn is taught to them. But some stuff is more subtle than others. For example: when you go to school you are going there to be taught. You know that and everyone else does as well. But with stuff as simple as children’s shows or books its assumed that it is just that. Children’s media. But in reality children’s media is filled with lessons in morality, relationships, and how you should treat the world around you.

When you are growing up there are very few cares that you have. The few that you have are your toys, snacks, and then the TV. So when Anna Kodé was thinking about where children could be learning more she naturally settled on the TV. Children are like sponges and absorb everything that its going on around them. This is how they learn right from wrong and morals. This has been made apparent because Roman Mars quotes that “the show has also been quietly educating kids about good urbanism and what a healthy neighborhood should look like.”. A healthy neighborhoods reflect good internal relationships with each other. They wanted to make that the goal. They wanted children to put themselves in that kind of environment. It opens up the children’s idea to a new and “different way of imagining life.”(pg. #3 U is for Urbanism).  This is because when you are a child your brain is only accustomed to one way of thinking because you have never been exposed to anything else. So having a show like sesame street that shows silly characters having different lives and different experiences it opens up the children world view. Treating the world around you correctly is just as important as how you treat the people around you. “Human beings are…a part of nature.” (pg #359, Jacobs) so we need to learn how to take care of nature around us and children’s media can help them do that. It teaches them to clean up the streets and why it is important that they do that. They do more than just “do it”, they say why and how and warn what will happen if not.
