Scoliosis braces and corsets. Two things that have similar forms, but are for polar opposite reasons. At first glance both are nearly identical as they’re both designed to tightly wrap around the torso and shape how the body is formed. Although they’re similar appearances, one is meant to prevent further harm, the other is for fitting into a beauty standard. One is a restraint used for the beauty of the beholder, the other for one’s own health.

Scoliosis braces rely on someone having a bad enough spinal curve to require intervention. Scoliosis is the condition where one’s spine will abnormally curve from side to side, normally becoming worse as time goes on. The purpose of it, tightly squeezing and restricting movement of the torso, is to lessen the spine’s ability to continue curving over time. It is hoped this will ultimately prevent the need for spinal fusion surgery, reserved for those with 40+ degree curves. Though the actual brace is very uncomfortable during day to day life, the long term benefits of it are very important.

Conversely, corsets use laces or ties to constrict the torso, straightening one’s posture and giving off a thinner look that’s easier on the eyes. Throughout history, corsets have been used to create a particular body shape that many in society found attractive. While they don’t have any connection to medical intervention, they are rather used to alter the appearance of one’s body.

Unfortunately, this results in restricted movement of the abdominal muscles. Due to the compression of the torso, normal movement can be made very difficult, but depends on the tightness of the corset. While the corset gives off more of a desired way of appearance, it costs someone their ability to breathe, move and live out a normal way of life.

Both the brace and corset have an effect on one’s confidence boost. While the brace prevents the wearer from having cute clothes, or outfits, the corset can be hidden underneath tighter clothing. The brace is a bulky piece of plastic that is noticeable beneath many articles of clothing, though the corset is meant to be worn underneath clothing. The corset, giving off a thinner appearance, will boost the confidence of someone by giving a body type they find desirable. No matter which one is being worn, they effect not only what was worn, but also the mental image a person has of themselves.

While one is considered a medical necessity, the other is a cosmetic accessory. Both serve their purpose by shaping and restricting one’s torso, but the results are beneficial to separate groups of people. It is important to know the difference between the two, because of the distinct purposes they serve for our world.
