You might think the Carrollton Greenbelt and the Carrollton High School Track have similar purposes, since they are both used for running, walking, training, and fitness. But, once you’ve spent time on both, you might realize that the experience of each is vastly different.

Yes, both places are used for walking, running, and exercise. They’re both outdoors, free, and used by people who want exercise. That may be true, but there are still so many differences between each place.

The difference between the Greenbelt and the High School Track is significant. People from all over Carroll County come to use the Greenbelt for casual walks, runs, and bike rides, whereas athletes at the Carrollton High School track train for specific running events and distances to prepare for competition and high pressure moments.

The running surface and terrain of both the Greenbelt and the Carrollton High School Track are far different from each other as well. Exercise is different on the greenbelt because there are plenty of hills, turns, and uneven surfaces. The surface of the Greenbelt is just paved trails and hard ground, but the track at Carrollton High School is made of a Rekortan M synthetic surface. This means it has a softer, bouncier, and more responsive surface. This rubber surface makes the terrain flat and also makes it easier to focus on your pace. The intent behind each of these spaces is clear in the materials used to create them, with the greenbelt designed for recreation and the track built for athletic training.

The atmosphere of the Greenbelt and the Track are also very distinct. Part of what makes the Greenbelt enjoyable is the variety of places they can choose to exercise. You get to enjoy the scenery, breathe fresh air, and enjoy a more calm atmosphere. Since the Greenbelt is 17 miles long, you are given the opportunity to run past Lake Carrol, the fields at Hobbs Farm, and through the woods of Hays Mill, whereas on the track, you must run the same loop over and over again. In Grisham Stadium, exercise on the track feels far more intense because it is a place designed to compete and push yourself.

Along with the feeling of each space, comes the sights. As an athlete runs around the high school track continuously, all they see is the stadium and the track. The size of the stadium and repetition of laps makes training feel more focused and energetic. Unlike the high school track, the greenbelt encompasses a multitude of views and scenery, which contribute to a relaxed outdoorsy experience. Even the scenery and architecture of each place reveal what it was designed to accomplish.

Both the Greenbelt and the Carrollton High School Track may both be places to exercise, but the experience and purpose of each are completely different. The people, pacing, sounds, scenery, terrain, routes, and the feeling of each space make each area unique. Even though they’re both places that are meant to keep people active, the way each one is built can shape how people use and experience it. Neither space is better than the other; they are simply designed with different goals in mind. Comparing the Greenbelt and the Track show that the design of a place can change the mindset of the people using it.
