Our environment is a very important aspect of our daily lives, it shapes our creativity, motivation, and feelings. When you walk into Onelife, its environment makes you feel strong and motivated. It gives you the encouragement you need to get stronger and to chase your dream physique. Now if you step into Planet Fitness, you start to feel like you belong. You can tell that this gym is has no judgement and has a sense of welcoming. No one tells you to feel this way, but the reason you do is because of the environment.

Even though Onelife and Planet Fitness both exist to create a space where you can push yourself and grow stronger, Onelife relies on the community to encourage you to make friends and push each other to grow stronger, whereas Planet Fitness uses “lunk alarms” to stop people who are too strong/intimidating from scaring new people out of the gym, allowing the new gym-goers to feel welcome rather than the regulars. Ultimately, this reveals that Planet Fitness wants the new people to feel more welcome and able to push themselves, while Onelife values more experienced people and tries its best to ensue community among its regulars.

The layout of a gyms equipment can also have a big effect on how the environment is percieved. Planet Fitness uses an open layout to again, allow people to feel relaxed and less intimidated. This can create a sense of comfortability because it’s easy to find where the equipment is. Onelife is in a similar boat, they have well organized equipment but instead of an open environment, they have zoned workout areas where the different types of equipment are. They also have walkways so its easy to get to the different areas. This can also make it easy for people to find where the different machines are. So both Onelife and Planet Fitness try to make their equipment well organized and easy to navigate.

The last and arguably most important part of an environment is how it makes people feel. For example: the bright colors in Planet Fitness allow people to feel comfortable and pushes the “judgment free” mindset. This can create a feeling of comfort whenever someone is switching to a new gym for the first time. On the other hand, Onelife uses a dark color scheme to minimize distractions and allow your muscles to look better in pictures. In color psychology, dark colors usually represent strength, which is what everyone wants to get in return for going to the gym. Onelife chose these colors to make people feel more hard-core and athletic, while Planet Fitness chose their colors to make people feel welcome and less intimidated. So both of these environments are good in their own ways; Onelife strives to create an environment for people who want to look and feel stronger, while Planet Fitness wants to make an environment for people who don’t want to feel judged, but want to feel welcomed with open arms. This is important because it shows the type of people each gym is trying to help grow stronger.

In the end, while both gyms have some important similarities, they also have some pretty major differences. Both Onelife and Planet Fitness have well organized gyms to help people navigate easier. However, they both have different color schemes to encourage the different behaviors and feelings they want their customers to experience. Each similarity and difference shows that both gyms are trying to encourage better mindsets in their customers. So, we can conclude that environment plays a very important factor in the gym world.
